Ultrasound Paper Widths Explained: 84mm vs 110mm vs 210mm — Which Does Your Sony Printer Take? (2026)

Ultrasound scan being performed — illustrating the 84mm, 110mm and 210mm paper widths used by Sony medical printers

If you have ever typed "ultrasound paper sizes" into a search bar at 4:45 on a Friday because the last roll just ran out, this guide is for you. Sony's medical thermal printers use exactly three paper widths — 84mm, 110mm and 210mm — and every printer takes only one of them. Get the width right and the rest of the decision (finish, roll length, box size) falls into place. Get it wrong and the roll simply will not fit the paper tray.

Quick answer

Sony ultrasound printers take one of three paper widths. The UP-D711MD takes 84mm (Sony UPP-84 media). The UP-895, UP-897 and UP-898 Series take 110mm (Sony UPP-110S, UPP-110HD, UPP-110HG). The UP-970, UP-971, UP-990 and UP-991AD take 210mm (Sony UPP-210HD). Precision Imaging Supply stocks Durico compatible paper for the 110mm and 210mm widths — the Sony UPP-110S compatible Durico 1100S and the Sony UPP-210HD compatible Durico 2100HD — but does not currently stock 84mm.

Why width is the first thing to check

Thermal printers do not have an adjustable paper guide the way an office inkjet does. The roll drops into a tray machined for one width, the print head is exactly that wide, and the cutter is set for it. An 84mm roll in a 110mm tray will slop side to side and jam; a 110mm roll will not physically enter a UP-D711MD. So before you compare finishes, prices or brands, confirm the width your printer takes.

Sony names its media by width. The number after "UPP-" is the roll width in millimetres: UPP-84 is 84mm, UPP-110 is 110mm, UPP-210 is 210mm. Sony's own product pages also describe these as A7-width, A6-width and A4-width respectively, which is a useful mental shortcut — the print you get is roughly a postcard, a large postcard, or a full letter-size sheet. (If the letters after the number confuse you — S, HD, HG — the Sony model-number decoder walks through every suffix.)

84mm — the compact UP-D711MD

The Sony UP-D711MD is the smallest printer in the medical line. It is designed to sit inside or beside a compact or portable ultrasound system, runs from direct DC input supplied by the host, and prints on 84mm-wide media. Sony offers two grades for it: UPP-84S, a standard-finish roll at 84mm × 13.5m, and UPP-84HG, a high-gloss roll at 84mm × 12.5m. The glossy roll is shorter because the extra coating adds thickness and a fixed-diameter roll holds less of it — the same trade-off you see in the 110mm family.

Durico manufactures direct equivalents — the ULSTAR-840S and ULSTAR-840HG — at exactly the same 84mm × 13.5m and 84mm × 12.5m sizes, packaged 10 rolls per box. Precision Imaging Supply does not currently stock the 84mm grades. If you run a UP-D711MD and would like to be notified when 84mm stock is added, the contact page is the fastest route; demand from readers is how the catalog grows.

One practical warning: the 84mm and 110mm rolls look similar in the hand. If your practice runs both a portable unit and a cart-based system, label the shelf. Loading the wrong width is the single most common "my printer jammed on a brand-new roll" call.

110mm — the workhorse UP-895, UP-897 and UP-898 Series

This is the width almost everyone means when they say "ultrasound paper." Sony's UP-895, UP-897 and UP-898 Series printers — including the current UP-D898MD, UP-X898MD and UP-D898DC — all take 110mm media, and Sony sells it in three grades: UPP-110S (standard, Type I), UPP-110HD (high density, Type II) and UPP-110HG (high gloss, Type V). Durico builds a matching grade for each, and all three are documented by Durico as compatible with the UP-895/897/898 Series:

Note the length difference. The standard and high-density rolls are 20m; the high-gloss roll is 18m. That is a manufacturer-level property of the gloss coating, and Sony's own UPP-110HG is also shorter than its UPP-110S. The roll-geometry explainer covers what those two metres mean in practice.

The 110mm grades ship five rolls to a box, each roll sealed in its own foil pouch, and Precision Imaging Supply also offers all three in a 10-roll box for practices that reorder monthly.

What about older 110mm printers? The UP-850, UP-860, UP-870 and UP-890 families also used 110mm-wide media, but Durico's published compatibility list stops at the UP-895/897/898 Series. This guide does not extend that list. If you own one of the legacy units, read what to do when your legacy Sony printer's paper is discontinued, which explains how to verify fit before you order rather than assuming it.

210mm — the large-format UP-970, UP-971, UP-990 and UP-991AD

The large-format line prints a full A4-width image on 210mm media. Sony's media for these printers is UPP-210HD, a Type II high-density roll, and Durico's equivalent is the ULSTAR-2100HD at 210mm × 25m — documented by Durico as compatible with the UP-970AD, UP-971AD, UP-990AD and UP-991AD. There is only one grade at this width: no standard and no high-gloss option exists in either the Sony or the Durico line, so the choice is simply whether to buy OEM or compatible.

Two things differ from the 110mm family. First, packaging: 2100HD ships five rolls per box but 25 rolls per carton, not 50, because each roll is roughly twice the width and a longer 25m run. Second, per-roll price is noticeably higher, which surprises buyers coming from a 110mm printer. It is not a markup — it is geometry. A 210mm × 25m roll carries more than twice the printable area of a 110mm × 20m roll. The 210mm cost-per-print breakdown works through the arithmetic if you want to compare on a per-square-metre basis.

The Sony UPP-210HD compatible Durico 2100HD is stocked in the 5-roll box.

Why a compatible roll fits the same tray

Width compatibility is not a marketing claim; it is a manufacturing spec. Durico builds each ULSTAR grade to the same width and the same Sony paper Type — Type I for 1100S, Type II for 1100HD and 2100HD, Type V for 1100HG — so the roll seats in the same tray, feeds through the same path and is cut by the same blade as the OEM roll it replaces. (OEM — original equipment manufacturer — means Sony-branded media in this context.)

Beneath the width, the construction is the same across all Durico grades: a five-layer film with a polypropylene substrate, a UV-cured glossy layer, a protective layer, the thermal coat and a back-coat that carries Durico's built-in anti-electrostatic layer, which Durico states is there to prevent thermal-head damage. The 5-layer construction article goes layer by layer. Every grade is manufactured in Durico's own plant in South Korea, and the line is FDA Registered and certified to ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and ISO 13485.

Price by width — what to expect

Prices below are the live Precision Imaging Supply prices at the time of writing. Sony OEM figures are typical street ranges seen at medical resellers, given as ranges because they move often.

Width Durico SKU (PIS price) Typical Sony OEM street range
84mm Not stocked —
110mm standard Durico 1100S — $43.95 per 5-roll box ($82.95 per 10-roll) UPP-110S roughly $70–$105 per 10-roll case
110mm high-density Durico 1100HD — $64.95 per 5-roll box ($129.95 per 10-roll) UPP-110HD varies widely by reseller
110mm high-gloss Durico 1100HG — $64.95 per 5-roll box ($129.95 per 10-roll) UPP-110HG roughly $125–$160 per 10-roll case
210mm Durico 2100HD — $199.95 per 5-roll box UPP-210HD roughly $285–$325 per 5-roll box

The savings are clearest on the 210mm roll, where the Durico 2100HD typically lands around 30% or more below OEM street pricing. On the 110mm grades the OEM spread is wide enough that you should price your own grade both ways; Durico's own literature quotes a 25–30% saving against competing products, and that is the figure to sanity-check against whatever quote you have in hand.

A 30-second width check

  1. Find the model number on the printer's front bezel or rear label.
  2. UP-D711MD → 84mm. UP-895 / UP-897 / UP-898 Series (any -MD, -DC or X- variant) → 110mm. UP-970 / 971 / 990 / 991AD → 210mm.
  3. Open the tray and check the old roll's core label. Sony prints the media code (UPP-110S, UPP-210HD, and so on) on the box and pouch; the number is the width.
  4. Still unsure? Measure the old roll edge to edge with a ruler. There is no 90mm, 100mm or 120mm ultrasound paper; you will land on 84, 110 or 210.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use 110mm paper in a printer that takes 84mm?

No. The UP-D711MD tray, print head and cutter are built for 84mm media, and a 110mm roll will not seat. There is no adapter.

Can I use 84mm paper in a 110mm printer to save money?

No. A narrower roll does not track straight through the feed path, produces a partial-width print at best and jams at worst. Use the width the printer was built for.

Does Precision Imaging Supply carry 84mm paper for the UP-D711MD?

Not at the moment. Durico does manufacture 84mm grades (840S and 840HG), but they are not currently in the PIS catalog. The 110mm and 210mm widths are stocked.

Is 110mm the same as A6?

Sony describes its 110mm media as A6-width — the roll width corresponds to the short edge of an A6 sheet. The print length is set by the printer and the image, not by the roll, so the "A6" is a width description rather than a fixed sheet size.

Why is the 210mm roll 25m long when the 110mm rolls are 18–20m?

The large-format printers use a bigger roll chamber, so Sony and Durico both specify a longer run for 210mm media. Roll length is set by the manufacturer to match the printer; it is not something you choose.

Do all three Durico 110mm grades fit the same printers?

Yes. Durico documents the 1100S, 1100HD and 1100HG as compatible with the UP-895, UP-897 and UP-898 Series. After changing grade, set the printer's paper-type menu to match — the UP-D898MD contrast and paper-type settings guide shows where that menu lives.

Is there a full list of which Sony printer takes which paper?

Yes — the Sony replacement-paper compatibility index lists every documented printer-to-paper match in one table.

Ready to order?

For any UP-895, UP-897 or UP-898 Series printer, start with the Sony UPP-110S compatible Durico 1100S (110mm × 20m, 5-roll box), or choose the Sony UPP-110HG compatible Durico 1100HG for keepsake-grade gloss. For the UP-970, UP-971, UP-990 or UP-991AD, the Sony UPP-210HD compatible Durico 2100HD is the 210mm roll. Every roll ships foil-sealed from US stock.
