A blank, faded, or streaked ultrasound printout usually isn't a broken printer — it's almost always one of a handful of quick fixes. Here's how to diagnose the most common thermal printing problems fast, and how to keep them from coming back.

Blank or White Prints
Direct thermal paper images on one side only. If the printer runs, feeds paper, and ejects a completely blank sheet, the roll is almost always loaded upside down. Reload it so the coated printing side faces the thermal head, following the diagram inside your unit. If you're not sure which side is coated, lightly scratch the surface with a fingernail — the thermal side leaves a faint mark.
Faint or Light Prints
Two usual culprits. First, the paper-type or density setting: many Sony printers let you select the grade (for example, standard vs. high-density). If the setting doesn't match the roll you loaded, density and contrast drift. Set it to match your paper — for high-density media like UPP-210HD or Durico 2100HD, that's the HD setting. Second, a worn or dirty thermal head prints unevenly; a head-cleaning pass often restores density. If prints are still weak after both, the paper itself may be low-grade — thin coatings simply can't hit full black density.
Vertical Streaks or White Lines
A consistent line running down every print points to the thermal head. The two common causes are debris or dried gel on the head and adhesive residue from a sealing label left on the roll's leading edge. Always remove that label before loading, and run a head-cleaning cycle. Persistent lines in the exact same spot can indicate a damaged head element, which is a service issue.
Prints That Fade Over Time
All thermal prints are sensitive to heat, light, and solvents — that's the nature of the technology. But paper quality changes how fast it happens. Store printouts and unused rolls in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight, heat sources, and alcohol or gel. Higher-grade media holds up markedly better: Durico tests its ULSTAR film for humidity resistance (40°C, 90% RH, 7 days) and heat resistance (50°C, dry, 7 days), and it shows less fading than other compatible films in both tests.
Smudging or Curling
Excess humidity and thin, low-grade stock cause smudging and heavy curl that makes filing a pain. Keep rolls sealed until use and choose paper engineered to lie flat.
